Oh, sorry. It's a I think maybe linguistic term for the he said/she said that you have in direct speech.

I think people who love podfic have already removed themselves from wanting to hear the real voices. You have usually women reading male characters, many have accents that don't match, and in the end you've gotta figure out if it bugs you or not. Some people won't listen to USians (or anyone not British for that matter) read Merlin. To each their own, i say :) Personally, I tend to pitch one voice lower (it often tends to be the physically stronger character, though I like to go against that....sometimes it derives from canon, i.e., Jensen Ackles has a very deep voice, so that Dean and Jensen get the deeper one).

Where to start? Listen to some :) There's the wonderful podfic archive that lets you search by fandom and pairing. And I often fall in love with a reader and follow them to new stuff.

If you want to start recording, there are several great intro posts in podfic tips that cover things from what setup is useful to what software to use and how to edit, etc.
