Just to say, for me, Irene is the missing link here-that's where the show explicitly sexualized and genderized its beatings, and EXPLICITLY linked them with CARING TOO MUCH: and caring too much is what (female) fans do. We already had Sherlock "beating" us this we, we were SHERLOCKED, and just now, here, with the AND YOU FANS LOVE IT feel of this ep, it suddenly got to be a bit much and all linked up badly for me. But that's how I'd make that move!
